For the past 20 years, Brunswick County, North Carolina has been one of the hottest markets for second homes, beach homes or golfing communities to retire in. Our great combination of mild year round weather, miles of soft sandy beaches and affordability are almost impossible to beat.
If you are considering where to look for a place to retire to, the east coast of the United States is not as big as you might think it is in terms of possible locations. Beginning at the top of eastern North Carolina you'll discover the Outer Banks (OBX). If you have never been, there is one very long and slow going road called Highway 12. The beaches are beautiful and during season the tourists are thick. However, the OBX are desolate and don't offer much in the way of things to do other than the beach.
As you wind your way southward towards Beaufort (pronounced "Bo -fort"), Morehead City and eventually Jacksonville (Camp LeJeune Marine Base), you find some nice little towns along the water but, they still seem a bit isolated from any form of cosmopolitan culture. New Bern is a nice small town and if your life revolves around sailing, then you need to explore The Pamlico Sound - as it offers great year round sailing.
The next stop is Wilmington, a wonderful small southern town located on the Cape Fear River. Wilmington is a young town with UNCW and Cape Fear Community College with wonderful shopping, plentiful upscale dining options, lots of entertainment and more. Some folks say downtown Wilmington reminds them a bit of Charleston but the rest of the town reminds them of a DC suburb.
Next is Brunswick County - which stretches from the shores of the Cape Fear River in downtown Wilmington to Little River, SC which is where you'll find the NC / SC state line. Towns include Bald Head Island, Carolina Shores, Oak Island, Ocean Isle, and Sunset Beach. Here you will also find an abundance of what we called "Plantations," which is another term for a community laden with numerous amenities. The amenities can include golf course(s), clubhouse, private beach club, restaurant, fitness center, walking trails, planned activities, exercise classes, clubs and more.
South of Brunswick County is Myrtle Beach, the second largest family destination in the US, with over 12 million visitors per year! If you love 24/7 tourism, then Myrtle Beach is for you! There are over 100 golf courses, tons of shopping & restaurants, great and massive entertainment venues and more to explore in the Myrtle Beach to Pawley's Island corridor. Then about 2 hours south of Myrtle Beach you will discover Charleston, a true southern sprawling city that will remind you a lot of where you live now but, only warmer and the folks are friendlier!
A few hours further south and you'll hit the tourist town of Hilton Head, which has grown leaps and bounds over the years. About thirty minutes west you will find Bluffton, SC. Bluffton is a bedroom community for Hilton Head and offers several large communities.
South of Hilton Head and you will find the city of Savannah, Georgia, followed by the Golden Isles. After that, you are in God's waiting room - otherwise known as Florida!!
